Setting Up Shopify Carrier-Calculated Shipping Rates

Shopify store owners can connect their own carrier accounts to display live shipping rates to customers directly at checkout.
To do this, simply follow the steps below.

Setting Up Shopify Carrier-Calculated Shipping Rates

1. Choose a Shopify Plan That Supports Carrier-Calculated Shipping Rates

To connect your personal carrier accounts (such as FedEx, UPS, or Australia Post) with Shopify, your store must include the carrier-calculated shipping feature.

This feature is automatically available on:

  • Shopify Plan

  • Advanced Shopify Plan

  • Shopify Plus Plan

If you’re using the Shopify Plan, you can still access this feature by:

  • Switching to annual billing (free activation), or

  • Paying $20/month as an add-on by contacting Shopify Support.

2. Install a Third-Party Shipping App on Your Shopify Store

By default, Shopify provides built-in integrations for a few carriers.
However, if you want a complete, all-in-one shipping solution that supports:

  • Third-party carrier-calculated rates

  • Label generation

  • Real-time tracking

  • LTL freight shipping

  • Pickup scheduling

  • Manifest printing

  • Custom documentation

  • Hazardous Material (HazMat) shipping

Then, you should install one of the following Shopify apps:

  • FedEx Ship, Rate & Track App

  • Multi-Carrier Shipping Label App

  • Australia Post App

These apps extend Shopify’s shipping capabilities and enable accurate, dynamic rate calculations at checkout.

3. Enable the Shopify Shipping App

Once you’ve installed your preferred app, you need to activate it for your Shopify Shipping Profile.

Here’s how:

  • In your Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Shipping and Delivery.

Shipping and Delivery

  • Click Manage Rates.

  • Select Use carrier or app to calculate rates, and pick the app you installed.

Shopify will now fetch real-time rates from the chosen carrier app whenever a customer checks out.

4. Validate Product Weights

Shipping rates depend heavily on accurate product weight.
To confirm this:

  1. Go to Products in your Shopify Admin.

  2. Select any product.

  3. Scroll down to the Shipping section and check the Weight field.

Validate product weight

Ensure every item in your catalog has the correct shipping weight defined — otherwise, carrier rates might be inaccurate.

5. Verify the Shipper Address

Your shipping rates are also calculated based on the origin address of your shipments.
To verify this:

  1. Go to Settings → Locations.

  2. Confirm that your shipping or warehouse address is entered correctly.

Verify Shipper Address

Accurate shipper information ensures your carrier can return valid rates during checkout.

6. Configure the Shipping App to Display Shopify Checkout Rates

Once your carrier app is active, you can configure it to fetch live rates.

If you enable Shopify’s Carrier-Calculated Shipping feature after installing the app, remember to register it again under the app settings to activate the feature properly.

By setting up carrier-calculated shipping rates, your Shopify store can display real-time shipping costs directly from your carriers — giving customers the most accurate and transparent pricing possible.

🔑 In short:

  1. Use a Shopify plan that supports carrier-calculated rates.

  2. Install and enable a third-party shipping app.

  3. Validate your product weights and shipper address.

  4. Configure your app to show live rates.
